Gmail users have stuck to their year-old IDs because Google never lets them change or edit it. But that could change soon as the company is said to be working on one of the most requested features by its users. 

Google has not officially confirmed the option but multiple reports have cited some changes in the Google support page where users can see the ‘change Gmail address’ section. This will be a significant move from the company, one that many have been asking for a while and here are the details of how the feature could work. 

Gmail Address Change: What It Means 

The report claims changing the Gmail ID/username means the account you created 10 years back can be edited with an updated username. The company seems to have assured that changing the Gmail ID does not stop your older username, and there is going to be no data loss for the users. 

In fact, the company is likely to let you use both the old and new usernames with all the emails headed to the same inbox. More importantly, Gmail will not only let you continue using the older ID but you can also use the username to login to your account. 

Gmail ID Edit: What You Need To Know 

While changing IDs will be a useful feature, Google is likely to set some limits about how many times you can edit and what happens to the older IDs. The company is tipped to have a limit of 12 months before you can edit the new username. Users are likely to be given up to 3 times to change the Gmail address. And the older address cannot be your new username either. 

So when is the biggest Gmail feature rolling out? Google is likely to have a phased release for the tool, and is tipped to focus on select regions initially and the changes will be offered from the Google My account for users.
