Instagram lets you post photos, stories and more but is platform becoming a social tool for SEO purpose?
Instagram has been spotted creating posts that rank on Google
Instagram has enabled creators and businesses to expand their reach and even earn millions. But the platform seems to be going beyond its purview and getting people’s posts ranked in Google Search. Yes, this has been mentioned in a report by 404Media who have spotted multiple instances of Instagram posts being ranked in Google, and most likely these users had no clue about this happening.
The report has sought a response from Google and Instagram’s parent company Meta, and it seems the former has played no role in these posts showing up for everyone on the internet without the user’s consent.
Why Is Instagram Doing This?
That’s the million dollar question that has irked many users, especially those quoted in the report, who noticed their posts flash on Google. Meta is yet to respond to the concerns which is why it is hard to pinpoint the reason for why this is happening.
There is a strong chance that Meta has deployed AI to test some of these features in the wild, which is why nobody has any idea about these posts. The company could be testing waters with the AI model before adopting them on a bigger scale.
The nature of these search ranks might not be a worry for now but if the model goes ahead, we could have similar AI concerns raised that the technology has become rampant about. Instagram is supposed to be an app where you post photos, share stories and connect with people.
You share them publicly, yes, but not to the extent that Instagram can use that content and host it on Google Search in its own version. AI misinformation is an issue and activities like these could coerce the media into misreading the context of any public post for a known celebrity and it will be downhill from there.
We do hope that Meta gives more answers about these practices and ensures that Instagram limits its AI outreach and at least seek your consent before indulging in actions like these.
