How do you win a toss?
The Indian men’s cricket team must be ruing their wretched luck after losing another ODI toss for the 20th time in a row. It’s a rarest of rare occurrence. The probability of it happening? 1 in 1,048,576 i.e. 0.00000095!
Phew.
And yet it has happened. And unfortunately, India have been at the receiving end of it. Nothing has worked – new captain, different opponent, a fresh venue, bilateral series or a multi-nation tournament. So, how can they overcome the jinx?
Well, it seems nobody has the answer and for good reason. It’s pure luck which, for the time being, isn’t on India’s side. KL Rahul, the India stand-in captain for the ongoing bilateral series, admitted as much on Wednesday.
“Honestly, that’s the most pressure I’ve had because we haven’t won a toss in a long time. I’ve been practicing, but clearly, it’s not working,” quipped Rahul.
Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar was also surprised and noted how preparation for toss won’t make any difference.
“Rahul explained that. He said that he’d been practicing. But how do you know what the opposition captain is going to call? For the first ODI, it was Aiden Markram who was (South Africa) captain. So Markram might be a person who likes opting for ‘heads’, and Temba Bavuma might be a captain who like to opt for ‘tails’. So how do you, how do you even try, even if you want to manipulate?” Gavaskar wondered.
