Virat Kohli smashed a 120-ball 135 to help India get a 17-run win over South Africa in the first match of the three-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Sunday.
The star Indian batter elluded to his mental space, revealing that he is still looking to be better everyday.
“For me, the core word is awareness. Being aware of situations, being aware of your own feelings and thoughts when you succeed and when you fail. So that you try to be in the most central spot,” Kohli said in a video posted by BCCI on social media.
“I have put in considerable amount of work over the years, so I would say that, yes, I am in that place now. I can say that I’m still looking to get better every day of my life. That’s where I am,” he added.

At the post-match presentation, Kohli had revealed that the mental aspect of batting—visualising game situations and maintaining intensity and sharpness—holds more value than over-preparation, which has never been his philosophy.
After a month-long break from international cricket, Kohli made a triumphant return by scoring his 52nd ODI and 83rd international hundred.
“I have never been a believer of a lot of preparation. All my cricket has been mental. I work physically very hard, as long as my fitness levels are up and I am feeling well, it’s good,” said Kohli.
“I’ve played 300-odd ODI games and so much cricket, if you’re in touch with the game and are able to hit balls in the practice, if you bat for an hour or two in the nets, you know you’re good.
“If you’re out of form, you want to play more in the nets. Other than that, it’s about being mentally ready and enjoying the game,” he added.
At this stage of his career, retaining the pure joy of playing and remembering why he started the sport is crucial for him.
“Today was really nice to get into the game like that. Pitch played decently for 20-25 overs before slowing down. I just wanted to play the ball and enjoy the game of cricket.
“It was about being in a space of enjoyment. And when you get a start, then the experience kicks in and you’re able to build an innings,” he added.
