The Government of India’s Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) has approved an out-of-turn promotion for Indian cricketers Sneh Rana and Pratika Rawal in recognition of their remarkable performances in India’s victory at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.

India claimed their first World Cup title last month by defeating South Africa by 52 runs at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. This historic win marked the Women in Blue’s first-ever ICC title across all formats.

A couple of official Railway Board communications to Northern Railway announced that Rana and Rawal have been promoted to the Group ‘B’ Gazetted post of Officer on Special Duty (Sports) in Level 8 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix. This promotion is part of the Out-of-Turn Promotion (OTP) scheme, which acknowledges outstanding sporting achievements.

The Railway Board has instructed Northern Railway to implement the promotion and assign Rana and Rawal to the OSD (Sports) roles or another suitable Group ‘B’ position. The orders were signed by the Director of Establishment (Sports) and Secretary of the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), with copies sent to the National Railway Sports Association and the players.

“Heartfelt thanks to @RailMinIndia for recognising the efforts and promoting me for the post of ‘Officer on Special Duty'(Sports). Railways is the best organisation to be employed in, as a sports person. It motivates us to be at our best always. Gratitude!” Rana wrote on social media.

Rawal also said: “Grateful to the @RailMinIndia for recognising our efforts and promoting me as the Officer on Special Duty (osd). Railways has always been very supportive, and your belief means a lot to me💪”

Rawal was the fourth-highest run-scorer at the tournament, with 398 runs at an average of 51.33. She picked up a serious injury in the group stage and missed out on the semi-final and the final — she would have been deprived of a medal because Shafali Verma had replaced her in the squad but the ICC made a special arrangement for a 16th medal. Rana also picked up seven wickets in the World Cup.
