Rohit Sharma entered his name in the history books on Sunday, November 30, by breaking the record of hitting the most sixes in ODIs. The 38-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai needed three sixes in the first India-South Africa ODI to go past Shahid Afridi’s tally of 351 sixes in ODIs, and he achieved the objective in the 20th over.
On the first two balls of the 15th over bowled by spinner Prenelan Subrayen, Rohit hammered two sixes to equal Afridi’s tally and then broke his record by hitting Marco Jansen for a six on the fourth ball of the 20th over.
During his 19-year-long ODI career, Afridi played 398 ODIs for Pakistan, Asia XI and ICC XI combined and smashed 351 sixes, whereas the ongoing match in Ranchi is Rohit’s 277th ODI for India.

| PLAYER | TEAM(S) | MATCHES | RUNS | SIXES |
| Rohit Sharma | India | 277* | 11,426* | 352* |
| Shahid Afridi | Pakistan, ICC, Asia | 398 | 8064 | 351 |
| Chris Gayle | West Indies, ICC | 301 | 10,480 | 331 |
| Sanath Jayasuriya | Sri Lanka, Asia | 445 | 13,430 | 270 |
| MS Dhoni | India, Asia | 350 | 10,773 | 229 |
Rohit already holds the record of hitting most sixes in T20Is (205 in 159 matches) and international cricket (645* in 503 matches). If Rohit manages to hit five more sixes in the ongoing match then he will become first batter to hit 650 sixes in international cricket.
Rohit has smashed 61* sixes so far against South Africa in international cricket. A total of seven sixes will help him break David Warner’s record of hitting the most sixes in international cricket against the Proteas. Rohit already holds the record for hitting most sixes in international cricket against Australia (138), Sri Lanka (86) and West Indies (88).

As of now, only three batters – Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli – have scored more than 20,000 runs in international cricket for the Men in Blue.
