iPhone Air sales have been low which has forced Apple to rejig the production and focus on the higher selling iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models.
The iPhone Air demand has been low and other brands don’t want to make the same mistake
Apple’s iPhone Air experiment seems to have failed and this is likely to have forced other brands to reconsider their own plans for slim phones. This has been mentioned in a DigiTimes report this week, which quotes brands like Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo and says they have cancelled plans to launch sleek phones that would have rivaled the iPhone Air in the market.
The market hype around the sleek devices was quite high thanks to Samsung launching the Galaxy S25 Edge model earlier this year and Apple then joining the ranks with the iPhone Air model in September.
But the novelty of a sleek phone combined with its limited features and a premium price tag has played against all the focus on the size of the phone.
iPhone Air Effect: End Of Sleek Phones Already?
Besides Apple and Samsung, Motorola launched its own Air model recently but the usual suspects from China have been missing and this report tells you the reason. It also claims that Apple has already asked its suppliers to shift their iPhone Air production to making more iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models. The company also saw its iPhone Air designer leave which is another hint about the future prospects of the iPhone Air lineup.
The fact that Apple is quickly moving away its focus from the Air version is not shocking. These thin phones have built the hype but functionally these devices are not matching up to the standards of the industry.
The launch of the iPhone 17 with more premium features and a better camera also doesn’t help the cause for the iPhone Air, which caters to a different buyer, but the premium on its design clearly didn’t find the right end.
Apple played the smart game by keeping the Air version out of the 17 series lineup, something that Samsung could have also done to avoid this dramatic U-turn. The iPhone Fold is the main target but Apple wanted to test the waters with a sleek and premium device to see how the market responds and the feedback has been mixed.
