The emotions were completely different in the Indian and South African camps on Wednesday afternoon after the second Test match concluded in Guwahati. The Proteas were jubilant, having registered their first series win on Indian soil in 25 years. Temba Bavuma extended his unbeaten streak as South Africa’s Test captain, and his team jumped to the second position on the World Test Championship Points Table.

On the other hand, the Indians were numb with their shoulders down. They succumbed to a 408-run defeat – their biggest ever in terms of margin of runs, and also a second consecutive series loss to a team from the SENA nations.

The audience at the Barsapara cricket stadium in Guwahati was fuming as well. It was the first Test played at the venue, and the fans had to witness such a shambolic performance from the hosts. Agitated by the loss, the spectators booed the Indian head coach, chanting, ‘Gautam Gambhir Haye Haye’, in unison.

Siraj gestured at the crowd to keep quiet, signalling restraint. Soon after, assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak walked up close to the gallery, appealing for calm.

The humiliation has once again brought Gautam Gambhir’s position as head coach under the scanner. When asked if he was the right man for the job (coaching the team in Tests), Gambhir said it was up to the BCCI to decide his future.

“It is up to the BCCI to decide. I’ve said it in my first press conference when I took over as the head coach. Indian cricket is important; I’m not important. And I sit here and say the same thing,” Gambhir was terse as usual at the post-match press conference.

“And yes, people can keep forgetting about it. I’m the same guy who got results in England as well, with a young team. And I’m sure you guys will forget very soon, because a lot of people keep talking about New Zealand (home series whitewash last year). And I’m the same guy who won the Champions Trophy, and Asia Cup as well,” Gambhir reminded.
