New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell has become only the second New Zealander and the first in 46 years to reach the top of the ICC men’s ODI rankings. With a career-best rating of 782, he joined the exclusive company of Glenn Turner, who held the top spot in the rankings in 1979.
He achieved the standings after scoring a match-winning 119 (118) against the West Indies in Christchurch at the Hagley Oval at home. Unfortunately, he also picked up a groin injury in the match, which ruled him out of the rest of the series.
Mitchell has been in stunning form in ODIs in 2025, scoring 761 runs in 16 innings at an average of 54.35 with one century and six fifties. Only Joe Root has more runs than him this year, 808 in 15 matches, and he plays in the top order, unlike Mitchell, who often carries the responsibility of carrying the middle and lower orders.
In the rankings, he left behind India’s Rohit Sharma by one rating point. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Babar Azam, Ireland’s Harry Tector, and India’s Shreyas Iyer all gained a spot each in the ODI standings, jumping to sixth, seventh, and eighth.
The men’s Test rankings also saw a shake-up following the conclusion of the India–South Africa Test series opener in Kolkata, with several names making noticeable strides. The Proteas’ captain Temba Bavuma cracked the top five for the first time in his career after his composed, unbeaten 55 in the second innings.
Shubman Gill, despite injuring himself during the match, edged up two places to 11th, while Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto surged four spots to joint-34th on the back of his Sylhet century. In the ODI charts, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran slipped to third, leaving India’s Shubman Gill (4th), Virat Kohli (5th), and Shreyas Iyer (8th) all holding firm inside the top 10.
On the bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah extended his stay as the No.1 Test bowler after another six-wicket outing at Eden Gardens. Kuldeep Yadav climbed two places to a career-best 13th, and Ravindra Jadeja rose to 15th with a four-spot jump. South Africa’s Marco Jansen nudged up to 11th, while Simon Harmer made one of the biggest leaps of the week, vaulting 20 spots to 24th.
Left-arm quick Marco Jansen also improved his standing among all-rounders, moving up to fifth.
