Shubman Gill will travel to Guwahati with the Indian team for the second Test against South Africa, but any decision on his participation in the match will be taken in the coming days. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to X on Wednesday to give a medical update on Gill’s recovery from the neck injury that he suffered on Day 2 of the first India-South Africa Test in Kolkata and stated that he is responding well to the medical treatment and will travel to Guwahati with the team.

According to BCCI, Gill will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team, and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly.

“Medical Update: Shubman Gill. Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team, and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly,” BCCI stated.

Gill, who is the captain of India’s Test team, suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test. He faced only three balls in the first innings before returning back to the dugout. He didn’t come out to bat again in the first innings and, at the conclusion of the day’s play, underwent treatment at a hospital in Kolkata.

Ahead of the start of the third day’s play, BCCI posted an update on Gill and stated that he won’t participate in the remainder of the match.

India missed Gill

In Gill’s absence, who didn’t come out to bat in the second innings, India failed to chase down the target of 124 runs against South Africa in the fourth innings and suffered a humiliating defeat by 30 runs.

If Gill is not available for the second Test, then Rishabh Pant will captain India, and one out of Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Reddy will replace him in the playing XI.
