A mobile phone charger heating up excessively is more than an inconvenience; it can be a serious safety hazard. Experts warn that the proliferation of counterfeit and substandard chargers in the market not only threatens the longevity of devices but can also trigger fires and electric shocks. Ensuring the authenticity of chargers has therefore become a critical concern for consumers.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has sought to address this challenge through its BIS CARE app, which allows users to instantly verify whether a charger or other electronic product meets government-mandated safety standards.

Understanding BIS CARE

The BIS CARE application enables users to check the compliance of electronic items including mobile chargers, power banks, LED bulbs, and home appliances. By entering the product’s ISI mark or R-number, the app provides an immediate assessment of its authenticity and adherence to safety regulations.

Risks Posed By Fake Chargers

According to specialists, using a non-standard charger can lead to:

  • Overheating that may cause fire or short circuits
  • Permanent damage to phone batteries
  • Slower or inconsistent charging
  • Electric shock hazards

Signs of a potentially dangerous charger include abnormal heat, burning odours, or frequent disconnections during charging. Consumers are urged to discontinue use immediately in such cases.

Step-By-Step Guide To Verification

  1. Download the BIS CARE app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Locate the ISI mark or R-number on the charger.
  3. Enter the number into the app and tap Verify.
  4. The app will indicate whether the charger is genuine or fake.

Action Against Fake Products

If a charger is flagged as fake, users can file a complaint directly through the app. Additionally, complaints may be lodged with the nearest consumer forum for further action. Authorities emphasise that discontinuing use of fake chargers is the first step toward preventing accidents and protecting household safety.
