According to a report in The Indian Express, these ‘Mega Coaching Terminals’ will be built in 20 selected cities with significant demand for both incoming and departing trains. These terminals will be installed at major locations in key cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad.
A mega coaching terminal is already under construction at Ahmedabad, enabling the city to handle around 150 trains, up from the current 45. Another new terminal is also planned in Surat.
During his visit last week in Ahmedabad, Railway Minister Ashwini Vasihnaw stated that key stations like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad have a high demand for new trains.
“In Gujarat, Ahmedabad and Surat face the highest demand. To address this and enhance operational capacity, a Mega Coaching Terminal will be developed at Vatva, where 10 pit lines will be built. This will add capacity for about 45 additional trains, enabling Ahmedabad to operate nearly 150 trains in total,” he added.
He also noted that Ahmedabad station will receive three more platforms, increasing its train handling capacity. “All platforms will be connected through a concourse roof plaza, and construction of the elevated road is also progressing at a fast pace. This will link both ends of the station through the concourse, elevated road, and foot overbridges,” the minister explained.
Earlier, in May, the Railway Board approved a final location survey (FLS) for a proposed mega coaching terminal near Devanahalli to decongest Bengaluru’s rail network. South Western Railway (SWR) had announced a ₹1.35 crore survey to address congestion in Bengaluru’s railway infrastructure and fulfil growing demand for passenger services, reported The Hindu.
