The celebrations are far from over for India’s Women’s World Cup champions.
Kolkata giants East Bengal Club have announced that they will felicitate Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh, two of the biggest stars behind India’s historic title win over South Africa in Navi Mumbai.
Deepti, who represented Bengal for seven seasons, was named Player of the Tournament for her sensational all-round show, topping the bowling charts with 22 wickets in nine matches and adding 215 runs, including a crucial 58 in the final.
Her teammate Richa Ghosh lit up the tournament with the bat, hammering 235 runs at a strike rate of 133.52, the highest in the event, and smashing 12 sixes, the joint-most in the competition.
In letters addressed to both players, East Bengal president Murali Lal Lohia praised their “inspirational journeys” and invited them to be honoured “in a manner befitting their stature.”
“Your journey from our home state to the world stage is truly inspirational, especially for countless young girls who aspire to excel in sports,” Lohia wrote to Richa, adding that her success brought “an added sense of joy and pride to every Bengali.”
In his note to Deepti, Lohia highlighted her deep connection with Bengal cricket:
“Your long and distinguished association with Bengal stands as a testament to your deep roots and your commitment to nurturing Bengal’s sporting legacy.”
The club said the felicitation ceremony will be held at a mutually convenient date for the two World Cup winners.
