The WhatsApp companion app could unlock new features
WhatsApp is bringing new ways to use the platform across devices and the latest could be a companion app that works for Apple Watch users. Many of you will be thinking that WhatsApp already works with the watch then why do we need a new app? As it turns out, the WhatsApp you use on the Watch has limitations and it seems the companion app is coming to make its use case wider and unlock more features.
The details about this app in testing has come through WaBetaInfo this week, which is available in the form of a TestFlight version that is compatible with the WhatsApp for iOS app. We do expect the new version to make its way to the public but no timeline has been given for now.
Apple Watch Companion App: What’s New?
This new companion app for Watch users will enable them to see the messages as well as media files that come in the WhatsApp feed. You can also use emojis to send chat reactions. These features might sound basic but Apple Watch users have not been able to use them through the current settings.
You will also be able to send new messages without waiting for the notification, again something that Apple has never offered for Watch users on WhatsApp.
Having said that, this version of WhatsApp for Apple Watch users will still need to be paired to the iPhone as it is not a standalone app like the Android version. It is startling that a premium wearable has limited its support for popular apps like WhatsApp but it seems we are finally going to see the messaging app work close to its Android avatar for smartwatch users.
In more official news around WhatsApp, the platform is making it easy to secure these messages and content with the help of passkeys.
These are the go-to mode for a password-less digital account and WhatsApp is allowing people to use the feature to secure their chat backups. Using passkey for encrypted chat backups means you can simply use the fingerprint sensor or Face ID and have the content secure.
