OpenAI is giving free access to its AI features but it is gradually adding paid versions especially if users cross a certain limit. This is now happening for the Sora app where you can generate AI videos with text prompts. OpenAI will be charging an extra fee so that people can top-up with their exhausted quota and generate more AI videos during the period.

The company is spending billions to keep its data centres running and the AI model getting better. It needs more premium tiers and add-on packs for AI features, this is one of the many that it plans to bring to the market.

Extra Sora AI Videos Cost You: Know More

The details about the new pricing option from OpenAI was shared by Bill Pebbles who runs Sora at the company. He said that users now have the option to generate extra AI videos from the app if they run out of their per day limit. This is similar to how you can boost or top up your data packs on a mobile network, except over here, you get the credits to generate more AI videos using the Sora app on your phone.

So if you need the extra support to make videos, Sora will charge you $4 (Rs 348 approx) and you get 10 extra video generations on the platform. The existing ChatGPT Plus and Pro users get 30 free and 100 free video generations per day, respectively. And if they run out of that limit, the new tier gives them 10 more videos through Sora.

Free Videos Not Sustainable

Why is OpenAI making this change? Pebbles admitted that giving free video support on Sora for users was not ideal for the company. And you can expect further cuts to happen in the near future as people get used to these AI tools and companies benefit from their usage to charge them a premium. The monetisation plans could get heavier for OpenAI and it seems ChatGPT will be at the forefront of these changes.

The company is looking to bring ads in ChatGPT and use the memory feature where people can browse through their earlier chats with the AI chatbot when they login. The report comes from The Information, which quotes sources from within OpenAI and the plans to bring ads to ChatGPT are well and truly moving the levels.

Memory acts like website cookies for AI chatbots, and if OpenAI does access the data to target users with personal ads, the whole dynamics of AI changes, at least for their business fortunes.
