The Tulsi Vivah story revolves around Vrinda, the faithful wife of the demon king Jalandhar. Jalandhar was invincible because of Vrinda’s chastity, so he attacked the gods. To vanquish him, Lord Vishnu disguised himself as Jalandhar and duped Vrinda, forcing her to lose her virtue and succumb to the deception.
When Vrinda learnt the truth, she cursed Lord Vishnu, turning him into a black stone known as Shaligram. As an act of penance, Lord Vishnu pledged to marry her in her next incarnation as the sacred Tulsi plant.
This union is celebrated as Tulsi Vivah, an annual celebration where the Tulsi plant is symbolically married with a Shaligram stone.
