There are few better spotters of talent than former England captain Nasser Hussain, and he has proved that again. Since Jemimah Rodrigues’ magnificent 127 not-out helped India beat Australia against the odds in the 2025 Women’s World Cup semi-final, fans on social media have dug out a seven-year-old post on X (formerly Twitter) from Hussain, where he had asked his followers to ‘remember the name’ of Rodrigues.

In the post, which came only a few weeks after Rodrigues made her India debut in ODIs and T20Is as a teenager, Hussain is seen standing beside her, with smiles on their faces. He predicted that the girl was ‘going to be a star for India’, just after some throw-downs with her. Check the viral post here:

It was a career-defining performance. Chasing a record 339, Jemimah and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (89 off 88) stitched a commanding 167-run partnership for the third wicket, guiding India to 341/5 in 48.3 overs, the highest successful chase in Women’s ODI history.

Entering early after Smriti Mandhana’s dismissal, Jemimah anchored the innings with composure, punishing loose deliveries and showing remarkable endurance even as fatigue set in. She was dropped twice, on 82 and 106, but capitalized fully, ensuring India finally overcame their knockout heartbreaks.

She was seen crying for several minutes after, hugging her teammates and family members, who were also present at the ground.

“I always believed in her capabilities,” her father Ivan told The Indian Express. “That David vs Goliath story is so apt — the little David, Jemimah, proved herself under pressure against the mighty Goliath, the Aussies. A lot of hard work has gone into her preparation right from her childhood . It was God’s favor and kindness that this victory came at the right time and against the strongest team,” he added.

India now play the final on Sunday against South Africa.

“As a coach I have always waited for such a day. I am happy to see Jemi’s progress but I feel the job is still to be done and finished. One more hurdle to cross for the world Cup,” he added.
