Star India batter Tilak Varma pulled off a brilliant catch on the boundary line in the second T20I against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, one that would remind many of Suryakumar Yadav’s catch in the final of the T20 World Cup last year.
The moment unfolded in the fifth over of Australia’s chase when Varun Chakravarthy removed Travis Head for 28. Head attempted to loft a length ball over long-off, but Tilak read it well, ran to his left and completed a sharp catch near the boundary.
Showing great composure, Varma lobbed the ball in the air before stepping out and returning to complete the catch. Watch the video here:
The catch drew parallels to Suryakumar’s iconic grab to dismiss David Miller in the 2024 World Cup final, a pivotal moment in India’s defence of 176.
In that game, Suryakumar’s effort to remove Miller turned the tide and sealed India’s victory over South Africa.
How did the match pan out?
Although Varma took the stunner, he was dismissed for a two-ball duck earlier in the day. Star Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood dismantled the famed Indian top-order with a probing spell to kill the contest as Australia cantered to a four-wicket win against India.
In front of an 82,438-strong crowd, India suffered one of its most embarrassing losses, with as many as nine batters not being able to reach double digits in a total of 125 in less than 19 overs.
Only Abhishek Sharma, in the form of his life, stood firm amidst the collapse with a fighting 68 off 37 deliveries. Alongside Harshit Rana (35 off 33), he stitched a vital 56-run partnership that pushed India past 100 after Hazlewood’s fiery 3/13 had reduced them to 49/5.
Hazlewood bowled an incredible 15 dot deliveries in his four-over spell to break the backbone of Indian batting and kill the contest within 20 minutes of start.
