Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav lost yet another toss on Friday (October 31) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), making it five in a row for the Men in Blue in the tour of Australia so far.
Before him, ODI skipper Shubman Gill had lost three tosses on the trot in the 50-over series. Overall, in ODIs, India are on a toss-losing streak of 18, which has a probability of only 0.00038147%.
A similar streak was running in T20Is as well, when the team had lost 16 tosses in a row, which only ended against the UAE in the recent 2025 Asia Cup. Most of those losses came under Suryakumar and he has often given some hilarious reactions after every such loss. At the MCG, he was seen signaling at one of his teammates and gesturing that they needed to do a pooja or a ritual to correct the misfortune.

Marsh has had the opposite luck, winning 19 tosses in as many matches and opting to bowl first in each of them, including in this game.
“It Is Okay”: Suryakumar Yadav
When asked about the toss by broadcaster Ravi Shastri about his luck, Suryakumar gave a more serious, calm answer.
“It is okay as long as you get what you want to do,” he said. “We were looking to bat first. It looks good. We’ve seen the stats, out of 40 times, 21 times the team batting first has won. That is the brand of cricket we want to play, as soon as we start going in (going hard from the start). It starts with Abhishek, he has been setting the tone really well with Gill and then I’ve been taking over. Happy to be back in the middle where I belong. Shubman Gill knows how to score runs, with him you’ve to run hard between the wickets and it gets easier if we bat together for long,” he added.
India decided to go with an unchanged 11 for the match.
India: Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav(c), Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson(w), Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah
