The entire country is still heartbroken over the sudden death of Zubeen Garg. The 52-year-old singer, actor and composer died of drowning on September 19 in Singapore. His fans, especially in Assam, are finding it hard to believe that their beloved icon is gone.
But Assam has decided to make sure his legacy never fades. The state government has announced that it will donate its entire share of GST collected from Roi Roi Binale, Zubeen’s last film, to the Kalaguru Artiste Foundation, a charity he himself started.
GST From Roi Roi Binale’s Collection To Be Donated
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on Wednesday and made it clear that there’s no entertainment tax on movies in Assam. In a statement, he shared, “The state government will exclusively hand over its share of the GST realised from the movie to the Kalaguru Artiste Foundation to support medical treatment of artistes, help flood victims, and assist needy students in their academic pursuits.”
He explained that GST on movie tickets is 18 per cent for tickets above Rs 100 and 5 per cent for tickets below Rs 100 and the state’s half of that will go straight to the foundation. The decision feels like a tribute straight from the heart. Through this gesture, Assam is turning every movie ticket into a small way of keeping Zubeen Garg’s spirit alive.
Assam Honours Zubeen Garg’s Roi Roi Binale
In a rare and emotional move, Assam has also decided to pause all other movie screenings across the state from October 31. From that day onwards, no other films including Thamma, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, Kantara: A Legend Chapter – 1, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, Jolly LLB 3 or Regretting You will play in theatres. Instead, only Roi Roi Binale, Zubeen’s personal dream project and final film, will be screened exclusively as a posthumous tribute.
Zubeen Garg’s Wife Immerses His Ashes
Adding to the wave of emotions, Garima Saikia Garg, Zubeen’s wife, performed the immersion of his ashes in the River Brahmaputra on Wednesday. She was joined by his sister, Palmee Borthakur and close family members. The quiet ceremony became another poignant moment in Assam’s farewell to its most beloved cultural icon. Fans and admirers flooded social media with messages of love and loss, remembering the singer whose voice remains etched in the heart of Assam.
