Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a laceration of the spleen and rib cage injury, is now out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital and recovering well. The India ODI vice-captain suffered the life-threatening injury while taking a catch during the 3rd match against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Initially, the team didn’t read too much into the injury but when Iyer reportedly fainted inside the dressing room and his vital signs dropped, he was rushed to a hospital where tests revealed internal bleeding due to the ruptured spleen.

India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav on Tuesday revealed that Iyer has been responding to his messages and that he should recover soon enough.

In a moment of levity, Surya quipped rare events happen with rare talents.

“Doctors aur physios ne bataaya ki unfortunate tha jo bhi hua toh aisa kabhi hota nahi hai, bahut rare hota hai. Shreyas bhi toh rare hai, toh rare talent ke saath he rare hota hai kabhi kabhi. But theek hai, bhagwan ne saath diya abhi. He is recovering really well. Doctors saath de rahe hain, BCCI is in full support toh jaldi recover ho jayega aur phir saath hi leke jayenge phir usko ghar. (Doctors and physios said it was an unfortunate injury; this is quite rare. Shreyas is also a rare talent. Rare incidents happen with rare talent. But it’s fine, God has been with him and he’s recovering well. BCCI is in full support, and we will take him home alongside),” Suryakumar said.

It is understood that BCCI’s head of medical services, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, in his communication to the board, commended the on-field medical staff for their swift and efficient response, which helped avert a potentially critical situation. Meanwhile, sources indicated that Iyer’s family members are expected to travel to Sydney soon to be by his side as he continues to recover.
