Shreyas Iyer continues his recovery in a Sydney hospital after suffering life-threatening injury during the third ODI between India and Australia recently. Iyer was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering a laceration to the spleen while attempting a successful catch of Australian batter Alex Carey. The Indian middle-order batter looked in unbearable pain and was taken off the field before being admitted to a hospital.

According to Dainik Jagran, Iyer’s medical reports were sent to Dinshaw Pardiwala, head of the ICC Medical Committee, BCCI Medical Panel, and the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Centre for Sports Medicine. Pardiwala reportedly told the BCCI that the board’s medical team’s timely intervention on the ground has saved Iyer’s life.

“Last but not least, congratulations to the medical team on the ground. Your timely diagnosis and immediate action saved a life,” the publication quoted Pardiwala’s email to the board as saying.

Nasty Fall, Horrific Injury

During the Australian innings on Saturday, Iyer ran backwards to take a difficult catch of Carey and landed awkwardly on the field and injured his lower left rib cage. He looked uncomfortable and managed to walk off the field before his condition worsened in the dressing room as his vital signs dropped to dangerous levels.

He was quickly hospitalised and admitted to ICU to be closely monitored. Later, BCCI released an official statement revealing the nature of injury.

“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well,” the statement read. “The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”

Tests revealed that Iyer had internal bleeding due to the laceration in the spleen.

Shreyas Iyer Out Of ICU

The India ODI vice-captain has now been shifted out of the ICU and is in a stable condition. However, he will continue to be in the hospital for a few days.

“He has been shifted out of ICU and may take a few more days before he is discharged from hospital in Sydney,” a BCCI source privy to the development told news agency PTI.
