In what might come as a massive relief to countless Indian cricket fans, star batter Shreyas Iyer underwent surgery after suffering a laceration to his spleen and has recovered since, according to a report in Cricbuzz. He remains stable and is out of the Intensive Care Unit of the Sydney hospital, where he is admitted.

According to the report, Iyer needed surgery for the spleen injury sustained while taking a catch during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground last week.

While diving forward to complete the catch on the run, Iyer landed in a bizarre manner, resulting in a ruptured spleen that needed immediate surgery.

Although the surgery was minor, Iyer will need to rest for at least five days, up to a week. The BCCI and the Indian team management in Australia, who had assigned him a doctor, are monitoring his condition through Dr Rizwan Khan, the Indian team physician.

The report also indicates that the BCCI is arranging travel for a family member of Iyer to join him in Sydney.

As of Tuesday, the star Indian batter has been taking phone calls, having home-cooked meals provided by local friends and handling his daily chores. India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav shared an update on his condition as well.

“We spoke to him at least on the first day when we got to know that he had an injury. I called him first. Then I found out that he didn’t have a phone. So I called the physio, Kamlesh,” Suryakumar said while speaking at the pre-match press conference.

“He told me that he (Iyer) is stable. On the first day, I don’t know how, but he was looking good. We have been talking for two days now. He has been replying. If he is replying on the phone, it means he is stable,” Suryakumar added.
