Paytm (One 97 Communications Limited), India’s leading full-stack payments and financial services distribution company, has announced that Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can now log in to the Paytm app using their international mobile numbers to make seamless UPI payments through their NRE or NRO accounts.

With this launch, NRIs from 12 countries can make everyday payments, transfer money to friends and family, and pay at shops, restaurants, or online platforms in India — all by scanning a UPI QR code. The move eliminates the need for international payment gateways or currency conversions, allowing instant fund transfers and reducing remittance delays and forex charges.

The service, powered by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is available for Indians residing in Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, the USA, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the UK, France, and Malaysia. Currently in beta, the feature will be rolled out to all eligible users in the coming days.

Paytm said the initiative aims to keep global Indians financially connected with India’s growing digital payments ecosystem. NRIs can also enjoy Paytm’s unique features such as downloading UPI statements in PDF or Excel, automatic spend classification, total balance view across bank accounts, and even generating AI rap songs based on recent spends through “Paytm Playback.”

A Paytm spokesperson said, “We started Paytm with the dream of building technology made in India, for India, and now for every Indian around the world. Enabling NRIs to use Paytm UPI with their international mobile numbers is another step in that journey.”

To get started, NRIs simply need to download the Paytm app, log in with their international number, verify it via SMS, and link their bank account to begin making instant payments.
