Karun Nair, who is one of the two Indian batters to score a triple century in Test cricket, was picked in the Indian Test team for the five-match series in England this year. But after he could only manage to score a total of 205 runs in eight innings of four Test matches in England, he was dropped for the home series against the West Indies. In fact, he was not picked in the India A team as well for the two four-day matches against Australia A in September and the upcoming two four-day matches against South Africa A.
After getting dropped from the Indian team, Karun rejoined Karnataka ahead of the start of the 2025-26 domestic season, and on Sunday (October 26), he played a knock of 174 runs from just 267 balls (14 fours and 3 sixes) against Goa in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match at KSCA Navule Stadium in Shimoga.
Following his super show with the bat, Nair chatted with reporters at the end of the second day’s play, and when asked about his snub from the Test side, he said that he was hoping for a better stint.
“Obviously, it is quite disappointing. After the last two years I’ve had, I think I deserved a lot better. More than a series,” Nair told reporters.
“There are certain individuals in the (Indian) team who have had good conversations with me about how they felt. That’s about it.”
“It does get into the head. But the second thought would be to do your job, which is to score runs and let people have their opinions,” Karun said.
“Honestly, what target can I have next? All I want to do is to play for the country. If you’re not able to do that, the next thing would be to try and win games for the side you are playing for,” he added.
Karun scored a four-ball duck for the Shubman Gill-led side in the first innings of the first Test and then followed it up with scores of 20, 31, 26, 40, 14, 57 and 17 runs.
In England as well, Karun was dropped from India’s playing XI for the fourth Test in Manchester but was included again for the fifth game at The Oval.
