India will look to regroup after the ODI series setback as they turn their attention to the five-match T20I series against Australia. Led by Suryakumar Yadav, the Men in Blue have kicked off their preparations for the series opener, set to take place on Thursday in Canberra.

This marks India’s first bilateral T20I series under Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as head coach, and notably, the first since Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bid farewell to the format. Ahead of the series opener on Thursday, Gambhir shared a smiling picture of himself on social media, captioned, “It’s always fun to do what is challenging.”

It’s not just a new beginning for Gambhir — Suryakumar Yadav, too, will be experiencing his first stint as India’s T20I captain in a bilateral series Down Under. The head coach has backed his skipper wholeheartedly, saying that Surya’s “free-spirited” nature aligns perfectly with the fearless essence of T20 cricket.

“Your off-field personality reflects on the field and in the dressing room, and Surya has maintained this atmosphere brilliantly over the past 1.5 years,” Gambhir told JioStar.

While India have been a dominant force in T20Is recently, Suryakumar himself has been under some scrutiny for his form. But Gambhir made it clear that he isn’t worried, reaffirming his commitment to an “ultra-aggressive template” within the team.

“Honestly, Surya’s batting form doesn’t concern me,” Gambhir said.

“We have committed to an ultra-aggressive template in our dressing room. It would be easy for Surya to score 40 runs off 30 balls and avoid criticism, but we have collectively decided that it’s acceptable to fail while pursuing this approach. Currently, Abhishek Sharma is in good form and has maintained it throughout the Asia Cup.

“When Surya finds his rhythm, he will shoulder the responsibility accordingly. In T20 cricket, our focus isn’t on individual runs but on the brand of cricket we want to play. With our aggressive style, batters may fail more often, but impact ultimately matters more than mere runs,” he added.
