Elon Musk’s X platform is looking for unique ways to earn revenue and this new trick is to make people spend money on usernames.
Get rare usernames for as high as Rs 8 crore on X
Elon Musk has found a new way to earn money for his platform X, formerly Twitter. There are millions of usernames lying inactive on the platform and Musk has decided to put them into use but also make money by auctioning them to the highest bidder. Usernames, especially the unique ones, can fetch lakhs among users, and Musk is banking on this craze to set up a marketplace just to sell the usernames that are lying unused.
The Handle Marketplace will reportedly cater to the X Premium subscribers, allowing them to sign up with a customised username. These will be divided further into two categories.
Usernames For Sale: What Is The Idea?
The new marketplace will cater to premium as well as the premium business subscribers who can choose from the priority and rare categories, where the former is free for the paid users while the latter will be put through an auction. In fact, the rare usernames could fetch as much as Rs 8 crore based on its uniqueness and also how many people seek its ownership.
This seems like a new way for Musk to attract more users to the premium version and get more people to pay for the service. When you buy or get the new X username, the older one will be inactive but won’t be available to a new user.
The lure of the premium service means if you stop paying for X, the username will switch back to the regular version. The platform has tried many ways to get more people on board for its Premium plan which also gives you Grok AI chatbot access with other advanced features.
The platform has battled the spam bot menace for a long time and the engineers working with Musk have started the work on cutting them out. The update was given by Nikita Bier, who is said to be the head of product at X, as per the profile. Bier even stated that the platform has already removed over 1.7 million automated spam bots from DMs and he claims the experience of using the feature will improve in the coming days.
The X chief has been promising to fix the mess around spam bot accounts that plague the experience of using the platform. Removing spam is critical for X and helps it become a reliable option for millions.
