Arranged marriages are a common part of life in India, but finding the right partner through family matchmaking has become increasingly challenging. A woman shared the struggles of her 33-year-old friend, who is having a hard time finding a suitable match despite “working in a stable government job, background from a rich family, even though she owns her own flat paid entirely from her.” She even tried online dating, but most men were only looking for casual relationships, so she deleted her accounts.

In her 20s, she focused on her career while being in a long-term relationship, but her boyfriend got married to someone else. Now, after crossing 30, she’s facing rejections because many men prefer younger women or have past complications, like they are divorced or separated.

Challenges Of Arranged Marriages Today

Taking to Reddit, the individual wrote, “I got a call from my long time school friend and after normal chit chat she started crying uncontrollably. She is 33, working in a stable government job, background from a rich family, even she owns her own flat, paid entirely from her but all her AM search is going down the drain. She tried dating now, but all the guys over there were looking for ons/fwb, so she deleted all her dating accounts.”

“In her early and mid 20s, she had a bf for 2-3 years and at that time, she wanted to concentrate on her career, she didn’t want to get married and eventually her bf married someone else. She is also getting rejected by guys who are 33. All the guys are basically interested in marrying someone 4-5 years younger to them and it is very difficult to find guys above 35 without any baggage (divorced/cheating/separated). I see guys crying all over that arranged marriage is brutal for them but seeing my friend crying really did upset me. I also got married in the AM but I married in my early-mid 20s and I had no issues at times,” the user added.

Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “AM is brutal for both men and women. A hell lot of entitled men and women and their insufferable families exaggerate the market value of their grown ass child while looking for flaws in others and rejecting people over the most random things.”

Another said, “My family has approached a girl, she must be older than me by 2-3 years, she rejected me without even meeting me on the basis that I was earning less than her and didn’t own a house at that time.”

“Arranged marriage has some very specific criteria for both man and woman. One of the criteria for a woman is being young, because they might fit in better in a new family. Your friend should try to find a man from her own circle in my opinion. From work or college, people are more accepting of the age difference in love marriage,” a comment read.

An individual mentioned, “AM for women who have stable jobs, own property, and aren’t ready to be a slave is extremely difficult. I can vouch from second-hand experience with my cousin. Men cry about “gold diggers” all the fucking time, but they don’t want to accept that the only reason they marry dependent women is so that they can have a free bangmaid. It’s not out of generosity, they are simply attracted to that kind of dynamic because it maintains their privilege.”

An individual added, “Arranged marriage set up works if you are aged between 23-27 for girls and 29-31 for guys. I have rarely seen anything above or beyond that works for anyone. Your friend is already more stable than most of the guys around her, which makes her very intimidating for most men. I understand if she wants to get married, she has to marry someone who is exactly her age.”

One more explained that in India, many women have become more independent and make their own choices when it comes to marriage, while many men still rely heavily on their parents to decide. They pointed out that a lot of men prefer younger brides, but this is often influenced by their parents rather than a logical reason. The person also suggested that worrying or crying over it doesn’t help, because even after marriage, challenges with men will continue.
