Gambhir’s chat with Rohit sparks retirement rumors
The stalwarts of Indian cricket – Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – may have returned to action with the 3-match ODI series against Australia, but the speculations surrounding their retirements show no signs of fading. Kohli is yet to go off the mark in the ongoing series, and his gestures on Thursday in Adelaide, after securing a second consecutive duck, have raised questions about his future. Rohit, on the other hand, notched a patient half-century, but his efforts couldn’t help India avoid a series defeat.
Amid doubts and guesses, a video has gone viral on social media in which Gautam Gambhir can be seen speaking to Rohit Sharma after India’s 2-wicket loss to Australia in Adelaide. The head coach was heard telling Rohit, “Rohit, sabko lag rha tha ki aaj farewell match thha, ek photo to lagaa do [Everybody thought it was your farewell match, put out a photo].”
The video is being widely shared online; however, its authenticity couldn’t be verified.
Rohit had a tough outing in Perth, managing just 8 off 14 before falling prey to Josh Hazlewood. But he bounced back in Adelaide with a composed 73-run knock and a 118-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer for the 3rd wicket. Rohit helped India reach 264 for 9. Though Australia chased the target to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, Rohit’s innings showcased his determination and calm under pressure.
While Rohit Sharma has rightfully earned some breathing space with a fighting 73 off 97 balls, albeit in a lost cause, Kohli’s back-to-back ducks, his first ever in international cricket, have definitely made his die-hard fans contemplate whether this is the beginning of the end.
Rohit first came here for the CB Series in 2007-08, while Kohli’s first tour with the senior team was in the 2011-12 season, when he made an instant impact with a Test century at Adelaide.
With no ODI series in Australia in the next two years, it is impossible to think that the duo will again be seen Down Under in India blues.
