Discover how your skin changes with each season and learn how to protect it from dryness, acne, and irritation year-round with expert dermatologist advice.

Your skin changes as the seasons do from summer’s sunburns and oiliness to winter’s dryness and irritation
A shift in season brings a corresponding change in how your skin responds to it. Your skin hosts a community of microbes that become disturbed when there’s a change in temperature. The protective barrier known as the lipid layer which helps keep the skin hydrated, also tends to weaken. Each of the four seasons brings its own set of skin challenges throughout the year, often leading to irritation and inflammation.
The chances of your skin adapting seamlessly to each season are quite low. Summer, Monsoon, Autumn/Spring, and Winter, every period affects your skin in unique ways.
According to Dr. Ashmita Dhekne Chebbi, MBBS, MD (Dermatology), here’s what to expect:
Summer: Acne, fungal infections, sunburns, and excess oil production.
Monsoon: Persistent oiliness, eczema, and fungal flare-ups.
Autumn/Spring: Temperature fluctuations can lead to rashes, acne, and skin irritation.
Winter: Itching, dryness, cracking, redness, and chapping become more common.
Moisture, heat, humidity, pollution, and air quality are key factors that significantly influence how your skin behaves. Every skin type reacts differently for instance, one person may experience dryness in winter, while another might have both oily and dry patches at the same time. However, some effects are frequently observed across all skin types during seasonal changes, such as fungal infections, sunburns, eczema flare-ups, excessive oiliness, rashes, irritation, dryness, and chapping.
To maintain healthy, balanced skin, it’s crucial to identify your skin type and any potential allergies. Sunscreen is a year-round essential, as is a good moisturiser. Choose products that suit your skin type and follow the recommended skincare routine consistently.
While these conditions are typically seasonal, some may persist longer during specific weather phases. In such cases, consulting a dermatologist can help manage and reduce their effects effectively.
