iPhone Air and the Galaxy S25 Edge hype has surely died down
Slim phones were eagerly awaited but somewhere people knew that having a thin device will have its compromises and that’s what we saw with the Samsung and Apple iPhone models launched this year. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge showed us what’s to come, and the iPhone Air model refined those rough edges to give us a more polished premium product.
While Apple sees the Air as a gateway to its foldable ambitions, Samsung needed a new product to show the world that it can innovate and bring products that don’t look the same across generations.
End Of Slim Phones? We’re Not Shocked
Reports this month suggest Samsung could cancel plans for the Galaxy S26 Edge model, retaining the S26 Plus moniker and the other devices once again. While iPhone Air production could be cut down to help with more units for the higher selling iPhone 17 and the 17 Pro models.
Apple played the smart game by keeping the Air version out of the 17 series lineup, something that Samsung could have also done to avoid this dramatic U-turn. The iPhone Fold is the main target but Apple wanted to test the waters with a sleek and premium device to see how the market responds and the feedback has been mixed.
However, there is a definite appreciation for how the iPhone Air has been engineered albeit with limited features and a small battery packed inside.
The ‘Third Model’ Syndrome
Apple has launched the iPhone in Mini, Plus and now Air avatar. Samsung continues to have three models but this year we got four models from the brand.
The iPhone experiments are based on a small group of buyers who like a compact device, a big screen iPhone or a sleek version. None of these seem to have done well in Apple’s eyes, which explains their discontinuation or their production units being passed on to the other variants.
Most reviews around the thin phones focus on the endurance of the devices but you also feel the novelty value of that size will eventually wear down. So, yes, the slim phone seems like a trend that was aimed to make a mark in 2025 and build forward but its early end will not at all be surprising for us.
