WhatsApp spam issue has become a concern but can it be fixed?

WhatsApp is used by everyone, including businesses who can send you delivery updates or spam you with offers that nobody asked for. The messaging app could soon end this misery for users by giving them more power about who messages them and there will be a limit on these spammers.

The platform is testing a new way to curb the spam menace and the details are limited for now but it seems the businesses using WhatsApp to send you the messages will be warned about how many texts they have sent the user. This feels a lot like the WhatsApp forward issue which also was given a limit in markets like India.

WhatsApp Stop Spam Mission: What It Plans To Offer

WhatsApp is owned by Meta and that makes it a ripe medium for businesses to send messages, whether users like it or not. There are quite a few who get these texts and are understandably blocked from doing it again.

There is going to be a limit for these businesses and if you don’t reply back to their messages, they will be blocked from using the platform to spam/message them. The company is starting the tests in select regions for now, and this is purely focused on limiting spams on WhatsApp.

It is intriguing that WhatsApp is keen on bringing businesses on their terms, especially when your parent company (Meta) has business intentions through its products. It does feel like WhatsApp will have a limit but give businesses the chance to curtail their spamming to avoid further action.

The other main change with WhatsApp could be the increased use of Status update where you now see ads. The platform is testing another Instagram-like feature where you can ask questions within these updates.

Meta AI is a big part of these changes, even though the end-to-end encryption standard remains the same. And now we are seeing even more Instagram-like tools coming to WhatsApp, at least in the beta avatar for now.
