Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana suffered an injury during the ongoing Women’s World Cup match against Sri Lanka, as she sustained a blow while keeping the stumps. For the team which is standing on the verge of elimination having won just one game, this might came as a big blow.
The incident happened in the 47th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Sultana took an unexpected blow from a rising ball.
Sultana collapsed on the pitch and was promptly attended to by the team physiotherapist. She walked off the field and was replaced by Rubya Haider as the substitute wicket-keeper.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are locked in a must-win clash, with both sides sitting on two points and two matches in hand. A win is crucial for either team to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
Meanwhile, a brilliant spell from Shorna Akter (3/27) propelled Bangladesh as they bowled out Sri Lanka for a modest 202, despite Hasini Perera’s career-best 85, in their crucial Women’s World Cup clash in Navi Mumbai.
Perera (85 off 99 balls, 13x4s, 1×6) anchored Sri Lanka’s innings, notching her maiden fifty and building crucial stands with captain Chamari Athapaththu (46) and Nilakshika Silva (37).
However, Shorna Akter stole the show with a brilliant 10-4-27-3 spell. Perera’s 85, now her highest ODI score, featured two dropped catches when she was put down on 55 and 63 as well.
Sri Lanka’s No. 3, Perera, erred with a sloppy shot late in the innings, missing out on a well-deserved hundred and handing Bangladesh a key chance they seized.
Sri Lanka seemed poised for a commanding first-innings total, but a sudden collapse started when Shorna dismissed Silva, ending a 74-run fifth-wicket partnership with Perera that had threatened to put Bangladesh on the back foot.
Shorna spearheaded Sri Lanka’s collapse, first getting Silva caught at short third in the 32nd over, then sending Anushka Sanjeewani back to the pavilion with an easy catch.
