Bhai Dooj, also known as Yama Dwitiya, is a cherished Hindu festival celebrated on the second day after Diwali. According to the Hindu calendar, it falls on the second day (Dwitiya) of the Shukla Paksha, the waxing phase of the lunar month of Kartik.

The festival symbolises the deep bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters pray for their brothers’ long life and well-being by applying a sacred tilak on their foreheads and offering them food.

Traditionally, brothers are expected to visit their sisters’ homes and enjoy a meal with them.

Why Is It Called ‘Yama Dwitiya’?

Bhai Dooj is also referred to as Yama Dwitiya, meaning the second day of Yamaraj, the god of death. According to legend, on this day, Yamraj visited his sister Yamuna, who warmly welcomed him, performed a tilak ceremony, and served him a meal. Pleased with her love and hospitality, Yamraj granted her a boon: any brother who visits his sister on this day and receives a tilak will be protected from untimely death.

Since then, this tradition has been observed annually by siblings across India.
