In today’s world, protein has become the buzzword. From gym trainers to fitness influencers on social media, nearly everyone emphasises increasing protein intake for a healthy lifestyle. Among other sources, such as lean meat and legumes, Greek yoghurt has also become a popular choice for high protein. But this has also sparked an interesting debate: Is expensive Greek yoghurt really worth it, or can simple curd do the job just as well?

A post on X (formerly Twitter) weighing in on the topic has garnered attention. In it, a doctor argued that the “protein trend” has become more of a marketing gimmick than a real necessity. “The new fad in India – protein. Add protein to everything and sell it at exorbitant prices. Case in point – high protein yoghurt, Greek yoghurt, etc, etc….You don’t need to spend huge amounts for this,” she wrote.

Is Hung Curd Better Than Greek Yoghurt?

She further explained her point, sharing that a cup of branded Greek yoghurt costs somewhere between Rs 70 to Rs 300. So, for a family of four, buying such products daily is not only impractical but also unsustainable. She suggested, “Just strain your regular dahi in a cotton cloth….viola, your hung curd is ready at less than half price. And your whole family can consume it. Add some chopped dry fruits and nuts or chia seeds, sabja seeds to it, it becomes even more protein-rich and also has good fats and fibre.”

Another person added, “Agree that standard dahi and hung curd can do the job at home protein-wise, BUT Greek Yoghurt has a distinctive tang and creamy consistency that goes very well with sweet breakfasts, sauces and desserts. They are different products with different uses.”

“Both have a different set of bacteria. Thus, they are different in texture too. Ever thought why even low-fat yoghurt feels creamy? Please stop making a fool of people in the name of a cost-effective solution. This misinformation helps no one. Disgusting!!” a different user mentioned.

Meanwhile, some also came in support of the doctor, with one sharing, “Absolutely. Where was this damn Greek yoghurt, 20 years back? Everyone was happy with the homemade curd.”

Many others have also weighed in on the debate, sharing their opinions on whether one must choose Greek yoghurt over the regular curd or vice versa.
