All-rounder Deepti Sharma entered her name in the history books on Tuesday, September 30, by becoming the first Indian to score a fifty and take three wickets as well in a Women’s ODI World Cup match. In the first match of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 played between India and Sri Lanka at Barspara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday, Deepti bowled 10 overs and picked up 3 wickets for 54 runs.

She opened her wicket account by breaching Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu’s defence on the last ball of the 15th over. During her stay at the crease, Chamari Athapaththu faced 47 balls and scored 43 runs.

Deepti’s second wicket came in the form of Kavisha Dilhari, who made 15 runs from 12 balls. Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh completed her catch on the second ball of the 27th over.

Anushka Sanjeewani (6 runs from 10 balls) was the third Sri Lankan batter dismissed by Deepti on Tuesday. Sanjeewani was caught by Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur on the last ball of the 29th over.

Before finishing as the highest wicket-taker for India and winning the Player Of The Match award, Deepti scored 53 runs from 53 balls. She added 103 runs for the seventh wicket with Amanjot Kaur, who made 57 runs from 56 balls. Deepti was dismissed by Achini Kulasuriya on the last ball of the Indian innings.

During her stay at the crease in the rain-hit first half of the India-Sri Lanka match, Deepti scored three fours.

In Women’s ODIs, a total of three players – Shikha Pandey, Deepti Sharma and Jemimah Rodrigues – have scored 50 and picked up at least three wickets for Team India, but Deepti is the only one to repeat the feat twice.
