For households balancing costs with sustainability, checking the stars on electronic items may well be the simplest way to make a difference

Higher star ratings on electronic items mean lower electricity consumption and bills.

Higher star ratings on electronic items mean lower electricity consumption and bills.

Shoppers across the country are increasingly turning their attention not just to price tags but also to the small stars displayed on electronic appliances. These stars, marked on products such as air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, and geysers, indicate how energy-efficient a product is.

The rating is issued by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under the Government of India. Officials explain that the system is designed to “inform consumers about how much electricity an appliance saves and how much electricity it consumes”.

What do star ratings mean?

Star ratings range from one to five, with 1 star representing low energy efficiency and 5 stars indicating the highest level of efficiency. In simple terms, “1 star: Low energy efficiency, consumes more electricity. 5 star: High energy efficiency, consumes less electricity”.

Appliances with higher star ratings not only consume less power but also bring significant savings in monthly bills. A BEE report highlights the difference: a 5-star refrigerator consumes about 199 units of electricity annually, while a 1-star model consumes nearly 487 units. The gap underscores how efficiency ratings can directly affect household expenses.

Why star ratings matter

Consumers who opt for higher-rated products enjoy multiple benefits. These include reduced energy consumption, lower electricity bills, and a smaller carbon footprint. Experts stress that the “long-term benefits” outweigh the initial costs since 5-star products, though slightly more expensive, recover the price difference through savings on bills.

What buyers should keep in mind

Authorities caution shoppers to always look for the official BEE logo and star sticker on appliances. The sticker provides details such as the model number, the year of rating, and the estimated annual electricity consumption. Since ratings are updated every year, experts advise verifying the latest certification before making a purchase.

It is worth noting that not every product carries a star rating, only appliances with significant energy usage are brought under this system. In some cases, companies may use misleading stickers for marketing purposes, so consumers should check carefully for authenticity.

Star ratings are not just a measure of energy efficiency; they represent a smart purchasing decision. As BEE officials emphasise, these ratings not only reduce your electricity bill but also contribute to protecting the environment.
