Abhishek Sharma has lit up the Asia Cup 2025 with his fearless batting at the top, setting the base of India’s unbeaten run so far. The young opener has scored at a rapid pace and racked up 173 runs from four innings at a whopping strike-rate of 208.43.

While his exploits have been limited to T20Is, former India batter Navjot Singh Sidhu feels that alongside Shubman Gill, Abhishek should become part of all three formats for India.

Sidhu predicted that Abhishek has the ability to emulate the legendary Virender Sehwag who was known for his attacking approach with the bat irrespective of the format. Sehwag was known for his ability to play big shots from the very first ball and was part of Indian squads that won the 2007 World T20 and the 2011 ODI World Cup.

“I want to see this Punjabi pair (Gill and Abhishek) in all formats,” Sidhu said in a clip on his Instagram account. “Abhishek Sharma should be groomed to play all formats, because if you play him all formats, another Virender Sehwag will be born. I’m dead sure of it. When it comes to hitting sixes, I’ve never seen anyone better than Abhishek.”

Abhishek made his T20I debut last year and so far scored 708 runs from 20 innings at a strike-rate of 197.21. He has scored two centuries and three half-centuries with his 135 being the highest individual score by an Indian in the format’s history.

Ashwin Compares Abhishek With Yuvraj

Legendary India offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin has also been full of praise for Abhishek as he predicted the 25-year-old to have a long career.

“I want to tell you that this is not the arrival of Abhishek Sharma, this is just the beginning. He has just started, and he has a long future ahead. He is going to blow the cricketing world apart,” Ashwin said on his Youtube channel.

Ashwin said Abhishek has the ability to become India’s best white-ball cricketer.

“Take that in writing. He has so much ability, just like how Yuvraj Singh became India’s marquee white-ball cricketer. The best white-ball batter in limited-overs cricket for India. He can reach that level easily. I think he is going to carry Yuvraj’s legacy forward. He is a phenomenal talent,” Ashwin said.
