Apple’s latest iPhone 17 series has officially launched and is available for purchase in Apple Stores across multiple countries. Indian users are lining up outside Apple Stores for hours to grab their shiny new device. But with the global rollout of the newest iPhone 17 series, social media is buzzing with concerns about the aluminium chassis’ durability.
As the anodised aluminium still has the raw silver metal colour underneath, even slight nicks or scratches are visible, compared to the iPhone 16 Pro’s titanium sides or back glass.
Over the past few days, several social media users have posted pictures of their iPhone 17, including iPhone Air, showing cracked glass and visible damage apparently due to drops.
Social media posts of a cracked body
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), a user shared images of three iPhones, all showing serious damage to their screens.
Another user posted photos of their orange-hued iPhone Air with badly cracked back glass. Neither user gave full details of exactly how high the phones fell or what kind of surface they hit, but the damage is evident.
Even if this damage is due to unfortunate drops, the posts raise questions around how well the device can handle everyday accidents.
What People Are Saying
The internet community quickly chimed in on the comments section of the post to share their views. Social media users have weighed in heavily, with some expressing their disbelief at how quickly the devices cracked.
“Let me guess…you dropped them 30 times in 27 unnatural ways that would never represent the real-world usage?” read a comment.
Another said, “The crack test seems to be successful.”
“Who uses a $1000+ phone without a case and screen protector?” questioned a user.
A user commented, “Hate it when I drop my phone and the entire back glass rips off. They need to fix this, bro.”
“It’s a softer alloy, so it’s more likely to pick up scratches and dents. But that doesn’t mean it’s inferior to past years’ product,” said a user.
Another remarked, “I guess you are supposed to enjoy the new color and not complain about how rigid the case material is.”
“Apple is going to release a revolutionary iPhone 18 next year… Made out of Nokia plastic,” quipped a user.
iPhone 17 Series: Features
According to Apple, the latest iPhone models include the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. They feature a larger, brighter display that is three times more scratch-resistant. The phone also has an all-day battery life with faster charging, a strong A19 processor for smooth performance, and a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system for high-quality photographs. Its front camera has been upgraded with the new Centre Stage function, making it Apple’s best front camera to date.
