The sudden and untimely demise of businessman Sunjay Kapur has triggered an intense property dispute within the family, even as his widow Priya Sachdev emerges as a visible face of his corporate legacy.

On Thursday, the Auto Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) convened a high-level meeting in New Delhi. Among those present was Priya Sachdev, who attended in her capacity as director of Aureus Investment (AIPL), the family’s investment office that holds a significant stake in auto parts major Sona Comstar. The meeting, presided over by ACMA President Vikrampati Singhania, began with tributes to Sunjay Kapur, a former president of the association and chairman of Sona Comstar until his death in June during a polo match in London.

Priya’s participation at the closed-door session drew wide attention, with many viewing her presence as symbolic of her stewardship of Sunjay Kapur’s sprawling business interests. Addressing industry leaders, she is learnt to have conveyed her willingness to shoulder any responsibility entrusted to her by the association.

However, away from the boardroom, Kapur family tensions are running high. Sunjay’s mother Rani Kapur and his sister Mandhira Kapur have alleged that Priya has assumed control of assets estimated at nearly Rs 30,000 crore, leaving them sidelined. Matters escalated further with Sunjay’s former wife, actor Karisma Kapoor, moving the Delhi High Court seeking a share of the family wealth for their two children.

In its order dated September 10, the High Court directed Priya to furnish a comprehensive list of all movable and immovable properties belonging to Sunjay Kapur as on June 12, the day he passed away.

The dispute has now entered a protracted legal phase, with multiple claimants asserting rights over Sunjay Kapur’s vast empire. While the family battle intensifies, Priya Sachdev’s presence at ACMA underscores her determination to retain a central role in steering both the business and the legacy of her late husband.
