Bangladesh suffered a humiliating defeat by 6 wickets against Sri Lanka on Saturday, September 13. In the Group B match of the Asia Cup 2025 played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, the Litton Das-led side failed to defend the target of 140 runs. For Sri Lanka, opening batter Pathum Nissanka scored 50, and No. 3 batter Kamil Mishara remained unbeaten on 46 runs from 32 balls. The duo added 95 runs for the second wicket.

Earlier in the first half of the match, Jaker Ali (41) and Shamim Hossain (42) added 86 runs from 61 balls for the sixth wicket to help Bangladesh bounce from 53/5 in 9.5 overs and post a competitive total of 139/5 in 20 overs.

The defeat against Sri Lanka has now put Bangladesh’s chances of qualifying for the Super Four in danger. The Bangladeshi team will progress to the next round only if they beat Afghanistan by a big margin in their next Group B match and then the Rashid Khan-led side lose against Sri Lanka as well in their last Group B match.

If Bangladesh lose against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka win against Hong Kong on Monday (September 15), then Litton Das & Co. will get knocked out, and with two wins each, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will qualify for the Super Eights.

In the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup as well, which was played in the UAE in T20I format, Bangladesh failed to qualify for the Super Fours.

If Bangladesh beat Afghanistan, Sri Lanka beat Hong Kong and Afghanistan beat Sri Lanka, then three teams – Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan – will finish with 4 points each, and in such a case, the two teams with better net run rate (NRR) will progress.
