ITR Date Extension Likely? The income tax return filing season 2025 is going on, with the deadline just three days away. The last date to file non-audit individual ITRs is September 15, 2025. So far, a total of 5.48 crore ITRs have been filed till September 12, compared with 7.6 crore returns filed last year till the deadline of July 31. Amid this, several professional bodies have also demanded ITR deadline extension flagging concerns around technical glitches on the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department.

The Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India’s (ICAI) Central India Regional Council, and the Advocates Tax Bar Association (ATBA) have highlighted key difficulties faced this year, such as severe floods disrupting work, delays in the release of updated ITR utilities, regular portal glitches and the added compliance burden during the festive season.

Many tax practitioners are also taking to social media, urging the income tax department to extend the deadline beyond September 15.

Will The ITR Deadline Be Extended?

Though several tax professionals’ bodies have demanded an ITR deadline extension, the income tax department is yet to provide any update on the issue. This year, the deadline was already extended till September 15 from the original deadline of July 31 due to the delay in the release of the ITR forms.

This year’s ITR forms were released with a delay due to various adjustments made in line with the interim Budget 2024 announcements on capital gains tax changes.

Who Needs to File by September 15?

Usually, the ITR filing deadline every year is July 31. However, as the income tax department released the ITR forms late due to various changes in the forms, the government extended the deadline till September 15. Now, the deadline is September 15, 2025, for non-audit taxpayers, including most salaried individuals, pensioners, NRIs, and those whose accounts do not require audit.

Businesses and professionals required to undergo tax audit must submit their audit reports by September 30, 2025, and file their ITR by October 31, 2025.

For taxpayers who need to provide a transfer pricing report (due to international or specified domestic transactions), the deadline to file the ITR is November 30, 2025.

What If You Miss the Deadline?

Filing after the due date has several downsides:

Late Fee: Under Section 234F, a penalty of Rs 5,000 applies if you file after September 15 but before December 31. For those with an income below Rs 5 lakh, the fine is capped at Rs 1,000.

Interest on Tax: If you still have unpaid tax, interest at 1% per month becomes payable under Sections 234A, 234B and 234C.

Loss of Carry-Forward Benefits: Losses from business, trading or property cannot be carried forward if the return is filed after late.

Refund Delays: Those expecting refunds will have to wait longer.

Department Scrutiny: Non-compliance can invite notices and tighter checks from the income tax department.
