According to officials, the army assumed control of nationwide security operations at 10 pm on September 9, following escalating protests that continued even after Oli stepped down. Restrictions have been imposed in several key areas, including Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur, to contain the unrest.
In a statement, the army voiced concern over activities of certain groups that it said were exploiting the volatile situation. “Certain groups are taking undue advantage of the difficult situation and causing severe damage to ordinary citizens and public property,” the statement read.
An officer at the Nepal Army headquarters added, according to ANI, “We have deployed our troops to prevent any untoward incidents, including looting and vandalism.”
