India’s star batter Suryakumar Yadav will captain the national side for the first time in a multi-nation competition when he leads the team at the Asia Cup 2025.
Now, as the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 looms on the horizon, the Asia Cup offers him his first real test in managing pressure, rotating squads, and handling the demands of a multi-team environment.
When asked whether leading India in a high-stakes multi-nation competition brings additional challenges compared to bilateral series, Suryakumar responded in his trademark witty style.
“Till now everything is going alright sir, toh kyu bina matlab ka ungli karna hai? (Why unnecessarily meddle?) We will continue to do and follow the same things we have done in all of the bilaterals so far. If some things are working, that means we are moving in the right direction,” he said at the captains’ press conference ahead of the tournament.
Impressive Start as Captain
Suryakumar has enjoyed a stellar run as India’s permanent T20I captain so far. Under his leadership, India have lost just two of their 15 matches, beginning with consecutive series wins against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, followed by a 3-1 series victory in South Africa.
The 34-year-old also admitted he was amused by suggestions that India were “runaway favourites” to lift the Asia Cup.
“Who told you this? I did not hear this. Yes, we are playing T20 cricket as a team after quite some time, but we were here early,”
Suryakumar remarked with a smile.
India’s Road Ahead
India’s opening group-stage clash against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will also mark their first white-ball game since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final in March.
The UAE contest will allow team management to test combinations before the marquee September 14 clash against Pakistan, which is expected to be one of the tournament’s highlights.
