Coimbatore Man Questions 81% Price Hike on Food Delivery App
Is ordering food online via platforms 2x as costly? A post has sparked a heated debate on the X platform among netizens. An X user shared the screenshot showing how the same food from the same outlet, just 2 km away, becomes 81 per cent expensive online.
“Why does ordering food in the app, 81% expensive than buying the same food from the same outlet, just 2kms away. Is this the real cost of convenience ? The extra that I have to pay to get the food delivered is INR 663.

The Price Discrepancy
Sunder’s Swiggy order, which included 10 parathas, chicken 65, four chicken lollypops, and two plates of chicken thokku biryani, cost Rs 1,473, including delivery and platform fees. By contrast, purchasing the same items directly from the restaurant just two kilometers away would have cost him Rs 810. Individual dish comparisons showed steep markups: parathas at Rs 35 each on Swiggy versus Rs 20 offline, chicken 65 at Rs 240 versus Rs 150, chicken lollypops at Rs 320 versus Rs 200, and biryani at Rs 230 per plate versus Rs 140.
Public Reactions
The post sparked mixed reactions. Some users defended the platform, highlighting convenience and safety. DialogueDojo argued that the premium is a trade-off for on-time delivery, variety, and customer service. Similarly, Sushant Mehta emphasized that app-based ordering is optional, and the extra cost covers manpower and logistics.
Understanding the Markup
The restaurant, not the platform, usually sets the menu prices on apps like Swiggy and Zomato. Platforms charge a commission of up to 30% per order, which restaurants often offset by raising prices. This explains why online menu rates are often higher than offline rates.
