Star India batter Shreyas Iyer has admitted that Nike, a brand with which he has a professional collaboration, offered him a trip to this year’s Wimbledon, but he chose to stay away, adding how almost every Indian cricketer landed up at the Championships this year.

Iyer played for the West Zone in a recent Duleep Trophy encounter against the Central Zone. Before that, he last played in the Indian Premier League final, where the Punjab Kings, a team that he led for the first time, finished runners-up.

Soon after, Iyer flew to Barcelona, where he met Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz a day after the latter’s four-set Wimbledon final loss to Jannik Sinner.

Nike, which shares ties with both Iyer and Alcaraz, facilitated the brief meeting between the two.

“Nike also offered to take me to Wimbledon… but I decided to stay away. It looked like the whole of India was in London this year,” Iyer said while speaking to GQ India. This year’s tournament saw a record presence of Indian cricketers, both past and present.

The Centre Court guest list featured batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, ex-India coach Ravi Shastri, star batter Virat Kohli and former skipper MS Dhoni. Multiple members of India’s Test team, including Rishabh Pant and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who were on tour in England at the time, were spotted at the iconic venue.

In August, the national selectors left Iyer out of the T20 Asia Cup team, a move that sparked widespread criticism online. However, weeks later, he was handed the leadership of the India A team for two multi-day games against Australia A to be played later this month.

“I can only control the controllable. I can only keep working on my skills and strength and when the opportunity arises, I’ll grab it with both hands,” Iyer said.
