AI for free, Microsoft is the latest tech giant to join the ranks with its rivals and offer its AI tools and platforms to the US government for free. This news comes just a few weeks after OpenAI made a similar deal with the country’s regime, offering the ChatGPT Enterprise version to the federal agency for just $1 which is practically close to being free.
Granted, there are some conditions in place which makes the government pay for the AI services eventually, but the US President Donald Trump-run government wants access to the latest AI tools, something that you get from Google, OpenAI and even Microsoft.
Free AI But What’s The Catch?
Making the government use its AI tools has a two-way benefit from these companies. The likes of Microsoft and OpenAI can help upskill the current staff at different government agencies, while also enabling them to upgrade the workforce in line with the changing trends, which helps them save the tax-payers money to fund their salaries.
The government also ensures that its data, privy to national security, is not part of the training process for their AI models.
The other way of looking at these supposed ‘free’ deals is the ability for these companies to side with the government and vice-versa when time and situation demands. The molly coddling between the corporates and the government is not a new strategy but with AI in the picture you just get a new version of the traditional tricks.
So, yeah, there is a popular phrase, there are no free lunches, and these free AI deals have a strong condition applied to the terms that only both the involved parties know about.
