One of India’s most cherished handloom creations, the Chanderi saree, is celebrated for its delicate texture, shimmering zari, and intricate embroidery. Revered for blending traditional elegance with modern style, these sarees require careful maintenance to preserve their beauty. Improper handling can lead to tearing, damage to the zari, and fading of colour, making proper care essential for longevity. If you are fond of Chanderi sarees and want to keep them looking pristine for years, here are a few tips to maintain and care for them effectively:

Washing and Cleaning

Dry cleaning is the safest method to protect the saree’s zari and embroidery. Always entrust your Chanderi saree to professionals experienced with heritage fabrics. For minor stains, avoid washing the entire saree. Instead, gently dab the area with a cotton pad soaked in cold water, adding a small amount of mild detergent if necessary. Avoid rubbing to prevent colour loss or damage to the weave.

Rinsing and Drying

If detergent is used, rinse the saree gently in cold water to remove soap completely. Avoid twisting or wringing the fabric. Do not expose the saree to direct sunlight, as it can fade colours and weaken threads. Instead, dry it in a shaded, well-ventilated area or hang it on a padded hanger.

Ironing and Folding

Iron the saree at low-to-medium heat. Always use a cotton cloth as a protective layer between the iron and the fabric to safeguard the zari and embroidery. Avoid pressing directly on heavy motifs or metallic work. After ironing, fold the saree carefully to maintain its smooth texture. Align pleats neatly according to the design to prevent sharp creases or stitch marks.

Storage Tips

Store the saree in breathable fabric bags like muslin or cotton. You may include a light plastic layer to preserve some air circulation. Place silica gel packets and naphthalene balls wrapped in cloth nearby to prevent moisture and insect damage. Avoid folding at the same place repeatedly, and gently change folds every few months. Hanging the saree in a ventilated space every six months also helps maintain its condition.
