Increasingly, news reports reveal incidents of hidden cameras being installed in hotel rooms, violating the privacy of unsuspecting guests. Such acts are not only highly uncomfortable but also constitute a criminal offence under the law.
Ravish Ranjan, a member of the National Council of Tourism and Hospitality and a hotel industry expert, told Local18 that guest privacy is a highly sensitive issue, and travellers must remain vigilant. He advises that the first step in choosing a hotel is to ensure it is a registered, professional property. Always request a GST invoice and verify your identity card. If a hotel provides a room without proper ID verification, it is a red flag, indicating weak security standards, and such properties should be avoided.
When making payments, opt for online or card transactions rather than cash. This not only creates a clear record of the transaction but can also prove useful if any issues arise later.
Detecting Hidden Cameras
Ranjan warns that hidden cameras are often not installed by hotel owners but by unprofessional staff. Being alert is crucial. Upon entering a hotel room, switch off all the lights and inspect your surroundings carefully.
Any small blinking LED light should raise suspicion. Hidden cameras can be disguised in switchboards, photo frames, false ceilings, LED bulb holders, or other objects near the bed. Mirrors also require attention; gaps or unusual reflections may indicate a camera. Washrooms should also be checked, as extra sockets or plugs could conceal surveillance devices.

Experts emphasise that travellers should prioritise verified, secure properties over cheap hotels. Cutting corners to save a few pounds can result in significant problems later. Ultimately, the safety and enjoyment of a trip depend on cautious planning. By staying alert, conducting basic checks, and balancing convenience with security, travellers can protect their privacy and ensure their stay is both safe and memorable.
