Meta’s Instagram is continuing its push to enhance user experience by introducing new features regularly. The latest addition in the works is the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature for Reels, a much-anticipated update that brings a new level of multitasking to the platform.
Watch Reels While Using Other Apps
With the PiP feature, users will be able to watch Instagram Reels in a small floating window while using other apps on their phones. Once active, the video will remain visible even after the Instagram app is minimised, allowing for seamless multitasking.
Selected users are now receiving a pop-up message on the app that says “Try Picture in Picture”. By tapping on it, the Reel begins playing in a smaller window that hovers over other apps.
The PiP mode can also be manually enabled or disabled via Instagram’s settings.
Limited Rollout For Now
Currently, the feature is in its testing phase and has only been rolled out to a limited number of users. However, Meta is expected to make it available more widely over the coming months.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri had earlier stated that the team was working on bringing PiP support to the platform. This testing phase suggests that the rollout is now close to reality.
Catching Up With TikTok And YouTube
Instagram users have long requested this feature, particularly since rivals TikTok and YouTube already offer similar functionality. These platforms allow users to keep videos playing in the background while browsing or using other apps, a convenience that Instagram users can now look forward to as well.
By introducing PiP, Instagram aims to improve user engagement and video watch time, giving content creators a better chance of keeping their Reels visible and increasing their reach.
Why Picture-In-Picture Matters
In today’s fast-paced digital world, users increasingly expect the ability to multitask. Whether it’s replying to a message on WhatsApp or checking emails, the ability to keep a video playing in the background offers greater convenience.
The PiP feature not only caters to this demand but also helps creators by keeping their content on screen longer, thereby boosting visibility and views.
